{"id":37409,"date":"2019-03-28T10:52:42","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T14:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=37409"},"modified":"2024-04-05T01:08:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-05T05:08:38","slug":"heirs-recover-the-7th-of-160-artworks-looted-by-the-nazis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2019\/03\/heirs-recover-the-7th-of-160-artworks-looted-by-the-nazis\/","title":{"rendered":"Heir&#8217;s Recover the 7th of 160+ Artworks Looted by the Nazis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Escaping the Nazi regime in 1938, Gottlieb and Mathilde Kraus fled Vienna, leaving behind their prized art collection of over 160 works.\u00a0 Now, after eight years of negotiations, their 17th-century painting attributed to\u00a0Jan van der Heyden,\u00a0<em>View of a Dutch Square,\u00a0<\/em>is to be returned to their heirs.<\/p>\n<p>The work was seized during the war and given to Hitler\u2019s personal photographer and close friend, Heinrich Hoffmann.\u00a0 When the Nazis were defeated, the Bavarian State was meant to return the looted painting to its rightful owner, but instead, sold the work back to Hoffmann\u2019s daughter in 1962 for 300 DM.\u00a0 The following year, she put it up for sale at Lempertz where it was purchased, in good faith, by the St. Victor\u2019s Cathedral in Xanten for 16,100 DM.\u00a0 In 2011, the Commission for Looted Art in Europe submitted a restitution claim on behalf of the Kraus heirs to Xanten.\u00a0 8 years later, the chairman of the cathedral\u2019s foundation stressed that they would \u201cvoluntary surrender the work in recognition of the Nazi injustice.\u201d\u00a0 It is nice to see that some people still do the right thing &#8212; even if it takes them a year, or two, or three&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately,<em> View of a Dutch Square <\/em>was not the only work from the Kraus collection sold to Ms. Hoffmann.\u00a0 According to Ann Webber, of the Commission for Looted Art in Europe, another landscape by Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem was \u201chanded over\u201d to her in the 1960s and is still on the Art Loss Registry.<\/p>\n<p>While this is a victory for the Kraus family, only seven of the 160+ works have been recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lootedartcommission.com\/TJTMUE84596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018View of a Dutch square\u2019 attributed to the Dutch 17th century painter Jan van der Heyden returned to the heirs of Gottlieb and Mathilde Kraus\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Escaping the Nazi regime in 1938, Gottlieb and Mathilde Kraus fled Vienna, leaving behind their prized art collection of over 160 works.\u00a0 Now, after eight years of negotiations, their 17th-century painting attributed to\u00a0Jan van der Heyden,\u00a0View of a Dutch Square,\u00a0is &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2019\/03\/heirs-recover-the-7th-of-160-artworks-looted-by-the-nazis\/?contemporary=N\">More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":37410,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[101,9,169],"class_list":["post-37409","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rehs-contemporary","tag-looted-art","tag-rehs-galleries-news","tag-restituted-art"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.0 (Yoast SEO v28.0) -
