{"id":3648,"date":"2013-05-18T01:40:37","date_gmt":"2013-05-18T01:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=3648"},"modified":"2024-06-17T16:22:57","modified_gmt":"2024-06-17T20:22:57","slug":"the-past-two-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2013\/05\/the-past-two-weeks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Past Two Weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_54351\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/basquiat_dustheads.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54351\" class=\" wp-image-54351\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/basquiat_dustheads.jpg\" alt=\"abstract painting of two figures\" width=\"234\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/basquiat_dustheads.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/basquiat_dustheads-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/basquiat_dustheads-768x657.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Basquiat&#8217;s &#8220;Dustheads&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Impressionist\/Modern and Post War\/Contemporary auctions are finally over and the results, for the past two weeks, were nothing short of spectacular. \u00a0I will go into more detail in my upcoming Comments on the Art Market (out at the end of the month), but overall more than $1.5 Billion (yes BILLION) worth of art traded hands and that was only at Sotheby&#8217;s, Christie&#8217;s and Phillips in New York (the latter only added about $79M to the total).<\/p>\n<p>For many it is hard to comprehend the prices for these works (ok &#8230; I find it hard, at times, as well). \u00a0I will say that some of the works were fabulous and probably worth the prices paid; however, many others were nothing more than &#8216;stuff&#8217; (in my opinion) and should have brought nothing &#8230; but what do I know about the contemporary market? \u00a0From the recent results, not too much.<\/p>\n<p>It is always fun to see the players in action and watch the money fly. \u00a0The real question is how long will the euphoria last and when will the\u00a0Contemporary\u00a0Art Correction take place?
