{"id":31157,"date":"2018-12-28T16:11:22","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T21:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=31157"},"modified":"2024-03-29T08:29:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T12:29:26","slug":"hey-dutch-restitution-committee-are-you-serious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2018\/12\/hey-dutch-restitution-committee-are-you-serious\/","title":{"rendered":"Hey Dutch Restitution Committee &#8211; Are You Serious?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anne Webber, from the Commission for Looted Art in Europe, and Wesley Fisher, of the Jewish Claims Conference, are calling out the Dutch Restitution Committee (DRC) for establishing a \u201chierarchy\u201d for dealing with art that was looted by the Nazis. \u00a0The committee is viewing works that were seized and confiscated at a\u00a0higher importance level than forced sales during the regime.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31167\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/kandinsky_bild_mit_ha_usern_website.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31167\" class=\"wp-image-31167\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/kandinsky_bild_mit_ha_usern_website-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"Kandinsky &quot;Painting With Houses&quot;\" width=\"230\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/kandinsky_bild_mit_ha_usern_website-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/kandinsky_bild_mit_ha_usern_website-768x571.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/kandinsky_bild_mit_ha_usern_website.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kandinsky &#8220;Painting With Houses&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since 2002, the DRC has returned 74 works to their rightful owners or heirs, rejected 63 claims and partially rejected\/granted another 19.\u00a0 In a recent ruling over <em>Painting With Houses<\/em> by Wassily Kandinsky, the committee determined that <em>there was no conclusive evidence that the Jewish family which owned it had sold it under duress. It also determined that the claimant had declared \u201cno past emotional or other intense bond with the work,\u201d whereas it \u201chas important art historical value and is an essential link in the limited overview of Kandinsky\u2019s work in the Museum\u2019s collection.\u201d <\/em>So, the interests of a museum outweigh those of the family it was taken from?\u00a0 You cannot be serious?<\/p>\n<p>Alfred Hammerstein, of the DRC stated that\u00a0\u201cthe Committee is entitled to take into account that the party claiming the painting has had no connection with it, and is only interested in restitution because of the proceeds arising from selling it.\u201d\u00a0 Does that really matter?\u00a0 If a work was stolen (or sold under duress), it should be returned to the family.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/news\/dutch-policy-on-nazi-loot-restitutions-under-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dutch policy on Nazi-loot restitutions under fire<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anne Webber, from the Commission for Looted Art in Europe, and Wesley Fisher, of the Jewish Claims Conference, are calling out the Dutch Restitution Committee (DRC) for establishing a \u201chierarchy\u201d for dealing with art that was looted by the Nazis. &hellip;
