{"id":31144,"date":"2018-12-20T15:43:54","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T20:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=31144"},"modified":"2024-04-18T03:27:51","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T07:27:51","slug":"christies_london_small_works_steal_the_show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2018\/12\/christies_london_small_works_steal_the_show\/","title":{"rendered":"Christie&#8217;s, London &#8211; Small Works Steal The Show"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<div id=\"attachment_31147\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31147\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/gerome-arnaut-and-two-whippets-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"gerome - arnaut and two whippets\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">G\u00e9r\u00f4me<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On December 11<sup>th<\/sup>, Christie&#8217;s presented their offering of British and European Art in London&#8230; it&#8217;s become the norm for these low-mid level sales to yield high BI-rates along with many works selling for under the estimate&#8230; this time around was no different.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31145\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31145\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/daumier-la-blanchisseuse-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"daumier-la blanchisseuse\" width=\"182\" height=\"265\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daumier<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By far and away, the winner on the evening was Jean-Leon Gerome&#8217;s <em>Arnaut and two Whippets<\/em>&#8230; the small work, measuring just 14 x 9 \u00be inches, depicted a guard carrying his weapons alongside two dogs; I mean, who doesn&#8217;t love a couple of good boys? This piece has changed hands a number of times in the past twenty years&#8230; it&#8217;s popped up at auction on three other occasions; most recently in 2009 at Christie&#8217;s London where it sold for \u00a3541K with premiums (w\/p) on a \u00a3400-600K estimate. Not only that, but each time the work appeared it featured a slightly different title, which makes tracking the provenance a bit more difficult (a topic we addressed in <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/newsletterarchives.htm?newsletter_no=228\">Volume 215<\/a>). This time around, the work hammered at \u00a3560K (\u00a3680K w\/p) on an identical \u00a3400-600K estimate. Interestingly, due to exchange rates, the price in US dollars was nearly $50,000 more when it sold in 2009. Taking second, in unimpressive fashion, was Honore Victor Daumier&#8217;s <em>La blanchisseuse<\/em>&#8230; the small oil on paper study measured just under 14 x 10 inches and was very dark and sketchy; it was expected to bring between \u00a3150-200K but sold well below at what I assume was the reserve price &#8211; \u00a3100K (\u00a3125K w\/p). There was no associated provenance with the piece; the catalog simply stated it was coming out of a private collection in France. Another small work rounded out the top three&#8230; <em>White Lilacs<\/em> by Henri Fantin-Latour found a buyer at \u00a375K (\u00a393,750 w\/p) on a \u00a360-80K estimate. I think we can all agree, there is not much substance to a sale when two of the top three lots are essentially studies&#8230; I mean, the top lot (which was also fairly small) accounted for more than 25% of the sale total!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31146\" style=\"width: 176px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31146\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Fantin-latour-white-lilacs-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fantin-latour white lilacs\" width=\"166\" height=\"198\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fantin-Latour<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There were a couple of impressive results (relative to their estimates), but nothing about this sale was actually impressive. A Guglielmo Ciardi, estimated at \u00a315-25K, found a buyer at \u00a381K; and an <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/Isaac_Israels_Bio.html\">Isaac Israels<\/a> made \u00a360K on a \u00a315-20K estimate&#8230; on the other hand, several of the works with loftier expectations were either pulled or failed to garner significant interest. Among the bunch were works by <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/jean-baptiste-camille-corot\/\">Corot<\/a> (est. \u00a3100-150K&#8230; it was really ugly), Deutsch (est. \u00a3200-300K), Theodore Ralli (est. \u00a370-100K), and De Nittis (est. \u00a3100-150K &#8211; withdrawn).<\/p>\n<p>Of the 63 lots initially included in the sale, two were withdrawn, 22 failed to sell (36%), and another 15 sold below their estimate.\u00a0 With those numbers, it was no surprise they didn&#8217;t hit their presale estimate range (the bottom end was \u00a32.325M) with the sale only taking in \u00a32.06M&#8230; and that total includes the premiums! Additionally, looking at the estimate accuracy, we see that just 19% of the lots fell into their respective estimates&#8230; not good on all fronts.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On December 11th, Christie&#8217;s presented their offering of British and European Art in London&#8230;
