Tissot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>News broke today that the National Gallery of Canada acquired\u00a0James\u00a0Jacques Joseph\u00a0Tissot&#8217;s 1870 masterpiece\u00a0<em>The Partie Car\u00e9e (The Foursome)<\/em> from the estate of David R. Graham, for an undisclosed amount.<\/p>\n<p>Tissot was a 19th-century French academic artist specializing in highlife genre paintings &#8212; elegantly dressed figures in scenes of fashionable life.\u00a0 The early part of his career was spent in France, and in 1871 he moved to London where his work was eagerly acquired by wealthy\u00a0British collectors.\u00a0 It was reported that the artist earned almost 95,000 francs in 1872.<\/p>\n<p>By the mid-1880s, Tissot returned to France and began concentrating on scenes of Biblical events, a subject matter that would occupy him for the remainder of his life.\u00a0 The artist died in 1902.<\/p>\n<p>The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Mus\u00e9es d\u2019Orsay et de l\u2019Orangerie, Paris, have co-organized a major retrospective of Tissot&#8217;s work that will run from 2019 through 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/entertainment\/local-arts\/national-gallery-of-canada-acquires-and-exhibits-19th-century-french-masterpiece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Gallery of Canada acquires and exhibits 19th century French \u2018masterpiece\u2019 | Ottawa Citizen<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News broke today that the National Gallery of Canada acquired\u00a0James\u00a0Jacques Joseph\u00a0Tissot&#8217;s 1870 masterpiece\u00a0The Partie Car\u00e9e (The Foursome) from the estate of David R.
