Before we begin, I want to stress that there were no blockbuster works, so having a big payday was a long shot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31108\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/sir_edward_coley_burne-jones_love_disguised_as_reason.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31108\" class=\"wp-image-31108 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/sir_edward_coley_burne-jones_love_disguised_as_reason-151x300.jpg\" alt=\"image-sir_edward_coley_burne-jones_love_disguised_as_reason\" width=\"151\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/sir_edward_coley_burne-jones_love_disguised_as_reason-151x300.jpg 151w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/sir_edward_coley_burne-jones_love_disguised_as_reason.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burne-Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What was encouraging is that the first 26 lots were fresh-to-the-market \u2013 all coming from a descendant of Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (the British Pre-Raphaelite artist).\u00a0 In fact, two were among the top three works&#8230;\u00a0 <em>Dana\u00eb in the Brazen Tower<\/em> (a 14 x 10-inch work on paper) hammered down at \u00a3135K\/$211K (\u00a3169K with the commission \u2013 w\/c) on a \u00a340-60K estimate.\u00a0 Burne-Jones&#8217; <em>Love Disguised as Reason<\/em> came in a close second at \u00a3130K\/$204K (\u00a3163K w\/c \u2013 est. \u00a340-60K).\u00a0 Sir John Everett Millais&#8217; portrait of <em>John Wycliffe Taylor<\/em> fetched the same price, but that one carried an estimate of \u00a380-120K (this painting sold in 1997 for \u00a395K).\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were a Dawson at \u00a3123K\/$153K (est. 50-80K) and a Thorburn at \u00a3119K\/$149K (est. \u00a380-120K).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31106\" style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31106\" class=\"wp-image-31106\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"image-millais\" width=\"159\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais-768x1030.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais-763x1024.jpg 763w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/millais.jpg 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Millais<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As with many of these sales, there were several lots that failed to find interest; among them were paintings by Cowper, Grimshaw, Hughes, Foster, Tissot, Munnings, Farquharson, and Seago (five out of five of his were bought-in).\u00a0 By the end of the short session, of the 125 cataloged works, 87 sold (69.6%) and they grossed \u00a32.01M\/$2.52M (\u00a32.49M\/$3.12M \u2013 w\/c).\u00a0 The low end of their presale estimate range was \u00a32.12M, so without the buyer\u2019s premium, they came up just a little short.\u00a0 And as for their accuracy rate, only 26 of the works sold within their estimate range, leaving them with a rate of 20.8% &#8212; which isn\u2019t too bad, but isn&#8217;t exactly good either.<\/p>\n<p>The problem this sale faced was the lack of interesting works.\u00a0 I keep saying this, there are just too many sales going on.\u00a0 The big boys need to step back and realize that sometimes, less is more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the afternoon of December 11th, Christie\u2019s presented their Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite &amp;
