A Nice Finish"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_31067\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/okeeffe_red_maple.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31067\" class=\"wp-image-31067 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/okeeffe_red_maple-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"image-okeeffe_red_maple\" width=\"182\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/okeeffe_red_maple-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/okeeffe_red_maple.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Georgia O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s The Red Maple at Lake George<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The final sale we will cover this month is Christie\u2019s American Art that took place on November 20<sup>th<\/sup> \u2026 thankfully, they waited until the week after the chaos to present it. \u00a0In addition, they took one painting that should have been offered in this sale and sold it in the Contemporary evening sale \u2013 O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s <em>Sky with Moon<\/em> (et. $3-5M) which made $3.6M with the commission (w\/c).\u00a0 So, while it was not a big loss for the actual American sale, I still feel they undercut this sale.\u00a0 Also, there was a Cassatt that they sold in the Impressionist sale, but her work can go either way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31066\" style=\"width: 173px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31066\" class=\"wp-image-31066\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"image-georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow\" width=\"163\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow-245x300.jpg 245w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow-768x939.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/georgia_okeeffe_black_door_with_snow.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Georgia O\u2019Keeffe&#8217;s Black Door with Snow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Taking the top spot was Georgia O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s <em>The Red Maple at Lake George<\/em> that brought $8.19M w\/c on a $7-10M estimate.\u00a0 The painting first hit the public market back in 1987 and sold for $770K (est. $250-350K); then surfaced again in 2004 and sold for $2.19M (est. $600-800K) \u2026 not a bad return.\u00a0 In second was another O\u2019Keeffe \u2013 <em>Black Door with Snow<\/em>.\u00a0 This painting, from the estate of Eugene Thaw, carried a $1-1.5M estimate and sold, with commission, for $3.07M.\u00a0 Third place was nabbed by Maxfield Parrish\u2019s <em>A Venetian Night\u2019s Entertainment\u2026<\/em> that achieved $2.05M w\/c (est. $1-1.5M).\u00a0 I should point out that had they sold O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s <em>Sky with Moon<\/em> in this sale, this lovely lady\u2019s work would have been one, two and three.\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were Childe Hassam\u2019s <em>The El, New York&#8230;<\/em> at $1.27M (est. $500-700K), and Marsden Hartley\u2019s <em>Landscape with Single Cloud<\/em> at $877K (est. $500-700K).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31068\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31068\" class=\"wp-image-31068 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"image-parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment\" width=\"190\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment-768x953.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment-825x1024.jpg 825w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/parrish_a_venetian_nights_entertainment.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maxfield Parrish\u2019s A Venetian Night\u2019s Entertainment\u2026<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among the works that failed to generate interest were Hassam\u2019s <em>A Wet Day<\/em> (est. $600-800K); Church\u2019s <em>On Otter Creek<\/em> (est. $400-600K); Twachman\u2019s <em>Cos Cob<\/em> (est. $200-300K) and Avery\u2019s <em>Straw Hat<\/em> (est. $150-250K).\u00a0 So from the looks of it, most of the bigger ticket items sold. In addition, there were some very impressive prices (based on the estimate ranges they were given) \u2013 Gifford\u2019s <em>White Mountain Scenery<\/em> made $433K (est. $150-250K); Johnson\u2019s <em>The Natural Bridge of Virginia<\/em> brought $457K (est. $100-150K); Bierstadt\u2019s <em>Horse in an Indian Encampment<\/em> garnered $213K (est. $60-80K), and Jacob Lawrence\u2019s <em>Letter from Home<\/em> hit $637K (est. $250-350K).<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the session, of the 76 lots offered, 62 sold (82.7% sell-through), and the total achieved was $26.49M w\/c \u2026 the low end of their estimate range was $19.08M, so it was a respectable sale.\u00a0 Of the 62 sold lots, 20 were below, 22 within, and 20 above their presale estimate ranges, which left them with an accuracy rate of 35.4% &#8212; not too shabby.
