Gabrielle Diot (1890) by Edgar Degas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1940,\u00a0<em>Portrait of Mlle. Gabrielle Diot <\/em>(1890) by Edgar Degas, along with about 400 other works were confiscated by the Nazis from Jewish art dealer Paul Rosenberg\u2019s Paris gallery.\u00a0 In 1944,\u00a0 some of his works were among those loaded on a cargo train heading out of the city.\u00a0 The train was intercepted by the Free French Forces (a heroic act that was immortalized in the 1964 film\u00a0<em>The Train<\/em>), which just so happened to be led by the Rosenberg\u2019s own son, Lieutenant Alexandre Rosenberg.\u00a0 This enabled the family\u00a0to recover some of the works (so far, 65 in all).<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Degas&#8217;\u00a0<em>Portrait of Mlle. Gabrielle Diot <\/em>(1890), was not among the recovered works.\u00a0 Since then, the painting has traded hands a number of times, first surfacing in 1974 at a Hamburg gallery owned by Mathias Hans and subsequently selling to a Swiss buyer.\u00a0 Then, in December 1987 a family member spotted the piece in an art magazine.\u00a0 It was again being offered for sale through Hans&#8217; gallery.\u00a0 When the family member\u00a0informed Mathias that the work was looted by the Nazis, he stated that\u00a0<em>confidentiality rules prevented him from disclosing who possessed it<\/em>, however, the family could pay a compensation of \u00a0\u20ac3m for the piece.\u00a0 In other words, they could buy it back &#8212; pay a ransom.<\/p>\n<p>More time has now passed and finally, the Rosenberg family has hired a London based art detective to help track down the painting.\u00a0 The past three generations of the Rosenberg family have kept up the search for all the missing works of art and\u00a0Marianne (Paul&#8217;s granddaughter) hopes that the family\u2019s decision to go public with their request for the return of the Degas might pry it loose.<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2018\/nov\/10\/nazi-looted-art-degas-portrait-family-quest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Art dealer\u2019s family\u2019s latest bid to find Degas looted by the Nazis<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1940,\u00a0Portrait of Mlle.
