Let\u2019s see what changed hands\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Works in the sale ran the gamut, ranging from 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century realist works, to mid-century Impressionist and Modern works, all the way through Contemporary with one work being completed as recently as this year! There were sculptures, paintings, and drawings\u2026 sketches and studies; to be honest, it was a bit all over the place\u2026 and we\u2019re only talking about 77 lots, so not a lot of any one thing. All that said, let\u2019s get into the numbers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30677\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30677\" class=\"wp-image-30677\" style=\"font-size: 12px\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Yeats.jpg\" alt=\"Yeats\" width=\"268\" height=\"206\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack B. Yeats<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The top lot\u00a0here was the catalog cover-piece, Jack B Yeats\u2019 <em>Sunday Evening in September<\/em>. The work, painted in 1949, was accompanied with provenance dating back to the artist, where it was first sold through British dealer Victor Waddington. The work has remained in a private London collection since\u00a01999, when it was acquired by the present owner for \u00a3265K (at that time, it was estimated at \u00a3120-160K). This time around, the work was expected to bring \u00a3300-500K and found a buyer at \u00a3395K\u2026 at an annual rate of return of just over 2%, the owner would have done better betting on the DOW but hey, they got to live with this beauty for nearly 20 years!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30675\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30675\" class=\"wp-image-30675\" style=\"font-size: 16px\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PAX.jpg\" alt=\"PAX\" width=\"279\" height=\"202\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Luke<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In second was <em>PAX<\/em> by John Luke, widely regarded as one\u00a0of the most exquisitely beautiful paintings of his entire body of work and said to be a turning point for the artist. In a letter written by the artist himself in 1944, Luke describes this work as \u201c<em>bright and luminous, yet rich and colourful. Very precise yet soft. Firm but yet gentile. Smooth yet lively. Broad yet detailed\u2026 It is Gloriously, Brilliant Technicolor.\u00a0<\/em><em>It\u2019s Stupendous. It\u2019s COLOSSAL! But it is only 15&#215;11.<\/em>\u201d Sounds like someone was a big fan of his own work &#8211; hah. The work was acquired in 1995 for just \u00a365K ($102K \u2013 est. \u00a335-50K) and this time around, it went for \u00a3225K ($292K \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K)\u2026 that\u2019s roughly a 5.5% annual rate of return \u2013 better but still not great.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30676\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30676\" class=\"wp-image-30676\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Yeats-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Yeats 2\" width=\"239\" height=\"185\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack B. Yates<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rounding out the top three was a tie\u2026 another work by Yeats and one by Gerard Dillon. The Yeats, titled <em>Early Sunshine<\/em>, was expected to bring between \u00a3120-180K whereas the Dillon was expected to bring just \u00a360-80K. This Yeats was fresh to the market and never previously offered at auction. The Dillon, on the other hand, last surfaced in London in 1999 where it went for \u00a379K ($128K \u2013 est. \u00a330-50K)\u2026 Both the Yeats and Dillon found buyers at \u00a3212K &#8211; the Dillon yielded a 5.25% annual rate of return.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30674\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30674\" class=\"wp-image-30674 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/dillon.jpg\" alt=\"dillon\" width=\"248\" height=\"203\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gerard Dillon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the end of it all, 52 of the 77 (68%) found buyers \u2013 so roughly 1\/3 of the material offered failed to sell.\u00a0 The total take was just over \u00a32.68M\u2026 with the lower end of the estimate range at \u00a32.02M, they made their number with the help of a few well performing lots (typical for this type of sale). From the looks of it, I can\u2019t imagine your financial advisor pitching you on parking your money in Irish Art, but as we always say\u2026 you should buy what you love and who knows what will happen over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There wasn\u2019t much auction action in the month of September, but Sotheby\u2019s did host a rather eclectic Irish Art sale over in London a few weeks back.
