This week saw a trio of sales across the pond in London\u2026 Two at Christie\u2019s and another at Sotheby\u2019s.\u00a0 Both took their shot at the Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite &amp; British Impressionist art market and Christie\u2019s also threw in a small 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century and Orientalist Art sale.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30369\" style=\"width: 134px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rossetti.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30369\" class=\"wp-image-30369 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rossetti.jpg\" alt=\"image-rossetti\" width=\"124\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dante Gabriel Rossetti<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first of the week was Christie\u2019s &#8211; a whopping 179 lots up for grabs. With an absolutely stellar performance, John William Waterhouse\u2019s <em>Flora <\/em>grabbed the top spot at just over \u00a3500K on a \u00a3150-250 estimate (\u00a3410K hammer)!\u00a0 It last sold in 2010 at Sotheby\u2019s in London for just \u00a3145K.\u00a0 The chalk drawing on paper is one of less than 150 studies known to exist by Waterhouse and depicts the subject from one of his most complex paintings from the prime of his career \u2013 <em>Flora and the Zephyrs<\/em> debuted at the Royal Academy in 1898 and would eventually become part of George McCulloch\u2019s remarkable art collection.\u00a0 In second was another preparatory study\u2026 this one by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.\u00a0 The pencil and chalk on paper was expected to bring between \u00a3200-300K and found a buyer just above that at \u00a3320K (\u00a3260 hammer).\u00a0 The work remained with the same family for more than 100 years before being sold in 1981\u2026 it then changed hands a couple more times, most recently in 2004 where it was acquired through Sotheby\u2019s London for \u00a3117K.\u00a0 Rounding out the top three was a work by Grimshaw\u2026 the smallish work is a window into a gloomy, moonlit evening in London\u2019s village of Hampstead.\u00a0 It was purchased from a small antique shop in Hampstead in the early 1960s and has been passed down through the family since\u2026 here, it was expected to sell between \u00a3200-300K and nearly surpassed that mark at \u00a3296K (\u00a3240 hammer).\u00a0 There weren\u2019t exactly many \u201chighlights\u201d here but there were a few, let\u2019s call them, bright spots\u2026 A Burne-Jones more than quadrupled it\u2019s \u00a38-12K estimate as it found a buyer at \u00a356K; similarly, a set of portraits by Evenly de Morgan hit \u00a3125K on a \u00a320-30K estimate; and a work by Charles Perugini, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy 1897, more than doubled it\u2019s \u00a370-100K estimate at \u00a3212K.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30367\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/john_atkinson_grimshaw_heath_street_hampstead.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30367\" class=\"wp-image-30367 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/john_atkinson_grimshaw_heath_street_hampstead.jpg\" alt=\"image-john_atkinson_grimshaw_heath_street_hampstead\" width=\"238\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Atkinson Grimshaw<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the end, 131 (73%) of the 179 works found buyers and totaled nearly \u00a35M\u2026 the sale was expected to bring \u00a34-7M, so without the buyer\u2019s premium they just missed the mark.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The auction action never stops.
