{"id":30331,"date":"2018-07-09T16:49:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T20:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=30331"},"modified":"2019-02-28T21:26:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T02:26:01","slug":"sothebys-old-masters-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2018\/07\/sothebys-old-masters-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Sotheby&#8217;s Old Masters, London"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_30334\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rubens_nobleman.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30334\" class=\"wp-image-30334 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rubens_nobleman.jpg\" alt=\"image-rubens_nobleman\" width=\"189\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rubens &#8220;Portrait of a Venetian Nobleman&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On July 4<sup>th<\/sup>, while we were celebrating our Independence, a group of dealers and collectors were enjoying a fairly successful evening at Sotheby\u2019s Old Master sale in London.\u00a0 Taking the top position was Rubens\u2019 <em>Portrait of a Venetian Nobleman<\/em> at \u00a35.42M ($7.16M \u2013 est. \u00a33-4M).\u00a0 Turner\u2019s <em>Walton Bridges<\/em> squeaked into second at \u00a33.376M ($4.45M \u2013 est. \u00a33-5M) and Hans Baldung\u2019s <em>The Holy Family with Five Angels<\/em> took third at \u00a33.01M ($3.98M \u2013 est. \u00a32.5-3.5M). Rounding out the top five were a set of 4 religious-themed panels cataloged as South Netherlandish School (c.1418-25) that made \u00a32.65M ($3.5M \u2013 est. \u00a31-1.5M) and a pair of portraits by Wright of Derby which garnered \u00a32.41M ($3.18M \u2013 \u00a32-3M).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30335\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/turner_walton_bridges.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30335\" class=\"wp-image-30335 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/turner_walton_bridges.jpg\" alt=\"image-turner_walton_bridges\" width=\"239\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turner &#8220;Walton Bridges&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In this field there are always some nice surprises; these included a collaborative work by Brueghel and van Balen which made \u00a32.05M ($2.71M \u2013 est. \u00a3600-800K), a Durer attribution that brought \u00a31.15M ($1.52M \u2013 est. \u00a3300-400K), a still life by Claesz at \u00a3550K ($727K &#8211; est. \u00a3150-200K), and these days no sale would be complete without a work that has a Leonardo connection \u2026 \u00a0here, one titled <em>Portrait of a Lady in Profile<\/em> and cataloged as Circle of Leonardo da Vinci grossed \u00a3550K ($727K \u2013 est. \u00a3200-300K). On the other side, there were a few biggies that could not find takers &#8211; these included two by members of the Brueghel family (est. \u00a32.5-3.5M &amp; \u00a3600-800K), a Murillo (est. \u00a3600-800K), and a pair of paintings by Vernet (est. \u00a31.8 \u2013 2.2M).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30333\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/baldung_holy_family.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30333\" class=\"wp-image-30333\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/baldung_holy_family.jpg\" alt=\"image-baldung_holy_family\" width=\"213\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hans Baldung<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By the end of the evening, of the 66 works offered, 51 (77.3%) found buyers for a total take of \u00a346.6M (56.3M).\u00a0 The low end of the pre-sale estimate range was \u00a333.18M, so they easily made that.\u00a0 The New York Times did point out that last year\u2019s Old Master sale brought in \u00a352.5M which means that this year\u2019s total was down 19%; however, they also highlighted the fact that last year the sale included a Turner that sold for \u00a318.5M.\u00a0 Like I always say, what a difference a painting or two can make.<\/p>\n<p>The real takeaway from this sale is that great Old Master paintings are in short supply (at least at auction) and any evening sale will only be as good as the works being offered.
