Work from this series rarely comes to market\u2026\u00a0of the 12 train station paintings by Monet,\u00a09\u00a0are currently in museum collections. This particular work has been held in a private\u00a0collection\u00a0in Texas since\u00a01985,\u00a0when it\u00a0was purchased\u00a0through Acquavella Galleries. Given the quality and scarcity, I think many believed the work would sell above the estimate, making this result less than impressive\u2026 That said, another one of these \u201crare\u201d Paris railway station paintings was included in the Rockefeller offerings last month and made just about the same \u2013 $32.9M. Taking second on the evening was Picasso\u2019s\u00a0<em>Femme\u00a0dans\u00a0un fauteuil (Dora Maar)<\/em>, which too had an unpublished estimate\u2026\u00a0this one, expected to sell between \u00a318-25M, found a buyer at \u00a319.3. The work was\u00a0fairly\u00a0fresh to the market as it was acquired by the current owner back in 1990\u2026\u00a0that was after the work failed to sell at auction on a \u00a33-3.5M estimate. Interestingly enough, the work\u00a0didn\u2019t attract much interest\u00a0and\u00a0if not for the work being guaranteed\u00a0prior to\u00a0the sale, it may not have found a buyer this time around either. Rounding out the top three was the surprise of the night\u2026\u00a0Franz Marc\u2019s\u00a0<em>Drei Pferde,\u00a0<\/em>sold for an impressive \u00a315.4M ($20.2M) on just a \u00a32.5-3.5M estimate!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30268\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/franz-marc.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30268\" class=\"wp-image-30268\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/franz-marc-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"Franz Marc\" width=\"181\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/franz-marc-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/franz-marc.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Franz Marc &#8211; Drei Pferde<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There were a few other apparent differences between the two sales\u2026\u00a0Christie\u2019s, riding a wave of momentum from the Rockefeller sales, had a reasonably\u00a0easy\u00a0time securing material \u2026\u00a0of the 44 works offered, just two carried guarantees, and they were both passed on to third parties \u2013 removing the risk from Christie\u2019s itself. The night prior at Sotheby\u2019s, most of the work was guaranteed by third parties or Sotheby\u2019s itself, which did not turn out well in the end\u2026 three of the\u00a0works\u00a0that Sotheby\u2019s had guaranteed failed to sell, one of which was a Monet \u2013 the three left Sotheby\u2019s on the hook for \u00a36M.<\/p>\n<p>Another clear disparity was bidding from Asian buyers\u2026 while both houses featured highlights from the sale at their Honk Kong location, Christie\u2019s was able to attract significant interest as Asian buyers accounted for 32% of the lots from their evening sale. While similar figures were not released by Sotheby\u2019s, multiple media outlets reported that staff members for the Asian markets were noticeably less active on the phones compared to Christie\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the evening totaled \u00a3128M ($168M), which was towards the upper end of the \u00a396.4-134.5M presale estimate range and 37 of the 44 works offered found buyers (84%)\u2026 that said, 30 of the 37 (81%) works achieved a hammer price within or above their estimate\u2026 another clear difference is at Sotheby\u2019s just 19 of the 28 (67%) sold works were within or above the estimate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to Sotheby\u2019s sale last week, Christie\u2019s also took it\u2019s shot at the Impressionist and Modern market over in London\u2026 the results were a stark contrast from the evening prior\u2026 while both sales had similar pre-sale estimates, Sotheby\u2019s realized &hellip;
