{"id":30121,"date":"2018-05-27T15:16:18","date_gmt":"2018-05-27T19:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=30121"},"modified":"2024-04-24T07:49:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T11:49:19","slug":"sanctions-imposed-but-so-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2018\/05\/sanctions-imposed-but-so-what\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanctions Imposed, But So What?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) announced that they are imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/aamd.org\/for-the-media\/press-release\/aamd-statement-on-sanction-of-berkshire-museum-and-la-salle-university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>sanctions<\/em><\/a> on La Salle University Art Museum and the Berkshire Museum for selling works to support operating budgets and\/or expansion initiatives. That is all well and good; but really, so what? Both institutions sold the works with full knowledge that this would happen. And are they really worried since these AAMD imposed sanctions do not seem to last very long?<\/p>\n<p>Back in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/06\/arts\/design\/06acad.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2008<\/a><\/em>, the National Academy Museum raised $13.5M from the sale of Frederick Church&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Church.lrg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Scene on the Magdalene<\/em><\/a> (1854) and Sanford Gifford&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Mount_Mansfield_Vermont_Gifford.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mount Mansfield, Vermont<\/em><\/a> (1859).\u00a0 Since the proceeds were being used for operating expenses it prompted the AAMD to impose similar sanctions &#8230; but they only lasted for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/19\/arts\/design\/19sanctions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two years<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Guess we know what kind of message that sends.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, the 2008 infusion of $13.5M was just not enough. By 2016, the National Academy was still in financial trouble and decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/18\/arts\/design\/national-academy-plans-to-sell-two-fifth-avenue-buildings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>sell two Beaux-Arts buildings<\/em><\/a> on Fifth Ave. (its home since 1942).\u00a0 The property was listed for $120M &#8230; a year later the buildings were still on the market.\u00a0 Now, the property has been split into three listings: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corcoran.com\/nyc-real-estate\/for-sale\/upper-east-side\/1083-fifth-avenue\/5101020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1083 Fifth Avenue<\/a><\/em> ($29.5M); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corcoran.com\/nyc-real-estate\/for-sale\/carnegie-hill\/3-east-89th-street\/5100917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>3 East 89th Street<\/em><\/a> ($29.5M), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corcoran.com\/nyc-real-estate\/for-sale\/carnegie-hill\/5-7-east-89th-street\/5104772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>5-7 East 89th Street<\/em><\/a> ($26M).\u00a0 Or you can now have all three for only $85M &#8230;\u00a0a real bargain!<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 the Delaware\u00a0Art Museum decided to auction off William Holman Hunt&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isabella_and_the_Pot_of_Basil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Isabella and the Pot of Basil<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to pay down its debt.\u00a0 Christie&#8217;s estimated the work at $8.4-$13.4M, but it only made $4.25M, a real disappointment.\u00a0 In turn, they received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aamd.org\/for-the-media\/press-release\/association-of-art-museum-directors-sanctions-delaware-art-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>sanctions<\/em><\/a> from the AAMD which appear to still be in place.\u00a0 What I did find very interesting was a statement made\u00a0at the time by the museum&#8217;s CEO Mike in an email <em>that leaders were disappointed by the sanctions but did not expect them to have a &#8220;significant&#8221; impact on exhibitions for the next few years, because the schedule is planned in advance. The sanctions do not apply to exhibitions already in the pipeline<\/em>. What? Come on!<\/p>\n<p>Later that year the museum sold Calder&#8217;s <em>Black Crescent<\/em> mobile in a private transaction. Then in 2015, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/06\/30\/delaware-art-museum-wyeth-homer\/29540615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">museum sold two additional works<\/a><\/em>: Winslow Homer&#8217;s <em>Milking Time<\/em> and Andrew Wyeth&#8217;s <em>Arthur Cleveland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Museums are organized as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aam-us.org\/programs\/ethics-standards-and-professional-practices\/public-trust-and-accountability-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public trusts<\/a><\/em> and should not view their collections as piggy-banks.
