Edwin Lord Weeks\u2019s “Rabat”<\/p><\/div>\n

This week Sotheby\u2019s presented a small selection of 19th century Orientalist works, and the results were impressive.\u00a0 Taking the top spot was Edwin Lord Weeks\u2019s Rabat (The Red Gate)<\/em> which brought \u00a3573K ($799K \u2013 est. \u00a3200-300K). In second was Paul Joanowits\u2019 Bashi-Bazouks Before a Gateway<\/em> at a really strong \u00a3465K ($648K \u2013 est. \u00a3100-150K) and in third was Cesar dell\u2019Acqua\u2019s An Ottoman Beauty<\/em> which sailed past is \u00a360-80K estimate to sell for \u00a3405K ($565K).\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were works by Anders Zorn (\u00a3309K\/$431K \u2013 est. \u00a3300-500K) and G\u00e9r\u00f4me (\u00a3297K\/$414K \u2013 est. \u00a3200-300K \u2026 this same painting was sold in a New York sale last November and made $213K … not a bad return in 5 months).<\/p>\n

Paul Joanowits\u2019 “Bashi-Bazouks Before a Gateway”<\/p><\/div>\n

There were many other strong showings including Ralli\u2019s Stringing Pearls<\/em> (\u00a3273K\/$380K \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K), Girardet\u2019s Evening Prayers<\/em> (\u00a3175K\/$244K \u2013 est. \u00a3150-200K), Bridgman\u2019s An Interior in Biskra<\/em> (\u00a3213K\/$296K \u2013 est. \u00a370-100K) and another G\u00e9r\u00f4me \u2013 Arnaut Drinking<\/em> \u2013 at \u00a3163K\/227K \u2013 est. \u00a360-80K \u2026 this same painting appeared at a sale in Germany last November and brought $31K \u2013 talk about a really nice return on the investment!<\/p>\n

Cesar dell\u2019Acqua\u2019s “An Ottoman Beauty”<\/p><\/div>\n

While there were some works that failed to sell, including those by Pasini, Rousseau, Brest, Styka, and Bridgman \u2026 they really did not have a significant impact on the final results.\u00a0 Of the 61 works offered, 48 sold (78.7%) and the total take was a fiery \u00a35.18M ($7.2M) \u2026 their presale estimate range was \u00a33.5M \u2013 5.12M, so they fell comfortably in the range at the hammer and eclipsed it with the buyer\u2019s premium.<\/p>\n

Of the 48 sold works, 15 were below, 19 within and 14 above their estimate range \u2026 giving them an accuracy rate of 31.1% (which is not too bad given the fact that we have seen some recent sales come in well below 10%).\u00a0 In addition, 23% sold above their range (a strong showing) and the top 3 works combined made \u00a31.44M, or just 28% of the sale\u2019s total \u2013 another sign of a strong, well-curated, sale with broad interest.<\/p>\n
