{"id":29198,"date":"2018-03-21T13:13:46","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T17:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=29198"},"modified":"2024-03-26T08:30:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T12:30:22","slug":"german-based-russian-avant-garde-dealer-exonorated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2018\/03\/german-based-russian-avant-garde-dealer-exonorated\/","title":{"rendered":"German Based Russian Avant-Garde Dealer Exonorated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2013, Itzhak Zarug (an Israeli born art dealer living in Germany who specializes in Russian avant-garde paintings) was arrested by German police on suspicions of running an international fraud ring.\u00a0 By 2016, authorities began to realize that the case against him was not as solid as they thought and he was released.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29204\" style=\"width: 143px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29204\" class=\"wp-image-29204 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"el_lissitzky-225x300\" width=\"133\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky-768x1026.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky-766x1024.jpg 766w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/el_lissitzky.jpg 1240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">El Lissitzky<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the investigation, Zarug\u2019s personal collection of over 1,800 works of art (including paintings by Marc Chagall,\u00a0 Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzky, and Kazimir Malevich) were seized.\u00a0 After a five year long investigation, Zarug has been exonerated and all but 3 of his works have been returned.\u00a0 According to recent reports: <em>The court ordered exhaustive analysis of the paintings. Separate investigations were undertaken in the UK, France, Israel, Spain and Switzerland, and more than ten expert witnesses testified in court. &#8230;\u00a0The court retained three works out of the collection of 1,800 after tests found traces of pigments that do not match the date of the pictures. Mr Zarug maintained he had bought the pictures in good faith<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Zarug was found innocent in regard to any involvement in the global counterfeit ring, he and his business partner, Moez Ben Hazaz, were\u00a0<em>found guilty on lesser charges after Hazaz, admitted falsifying the provenance of some works in order to drive up the price.
