I should probably stress the fact that this Phillips sale included both Modern works, which are typically sold alongside Impressionist works, and Contemporary\u2026<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29127\" style=\"width: 124px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-matisse.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29127\" class=\"wp-image-29127 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-matisse-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"2-matisse-233x300\" width=\"114\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-matisse-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-matisse.jpg 365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 114px) 100vw, 114px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matisse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leading the evening was Pablo Picasso\u2019s <em>La Dormeuse<\/em>, finding a buyer at \u00a341.9M ($57.8M), which absolutely demolished the \u00a312-18M estimate. That work alone accounted for 43% of the entire evening sale! Surprisingly, Phillips was able to secure the work without guaranteeing it \u2013 something they often have to do in order to secure works over the competition. <em>Nu allonge<\/em>, a sculpture by Henri Matisse, sold for \u00a314.9M ($20M \u2013 est. \u00a35-7M)\u2026 the 1907 bronze was one of the first cast from an edition of 10 and has been unseen since it was exhibited in 1917. <em>Helter Skelter<\/em>, a massive canvas by Mark Bradford coming from John McEnroe\u2019s collection, rounded out the top three at \u00a38.7M ($12M \u2013 est. \u00a36-8M). The work by Bradford, executed in just 2007, measured a whopping 144 x 407 7\/8 inches\u2026 going to need some big walls for that one! Of course, there were a handful of failures \u2013 the only two works by Warhol (both estimated at \u00a31.4-1.8M) in the<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29128\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3-bradford.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29128\" class=\"wp-image-29128 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3-bradford-300x106.jpg\" alt=\"3-bradford-300x106\" width=\"178\" height=\"63\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bradford<\/p><\/div>\n<p>sale remained unsold at the end of the evening, along with pieces by Fontana and Kandinsky. Interestingly, one of the Warhol\u2019s and the Kandinsky were scrubbed from Phillips\u2019 website and the lots are listed as \u201cno longer available\u201d\u2026 gotta love transparency in the art market!<\/p>\n<p>As I said earlier, this was a very strong sale by Phillips\u2019 standards\u2026 44 of the 50 (88%) of the works on the block found a buyer and the total on the evening was \u00a397.7M ($135), when it was only expected to bring between \u00a351.2-73.1M.
