{"id":28361,"date":"2017-12-14T16:32:40","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T21:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=28361"},"modified":"2023-12-11T07:07:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T12:07:47","slug":"christies-london-19th-century-european","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2017\/12\/christies-london-19th-century-european\/","title":{"rendered":"Christie&#8217;s London: 19th Century European"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_28362\" style=\"width: 176px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/delacroix.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28362\" class=\"wp-image-28362 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/delacroix-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"delacroix-300x235\" width=\"166\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/delacroix-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/delacroix-768x603.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/delacroix.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delacroix<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Christie\u2019s, London, presented their 19<sup>th<\/sup> century painting sale on the 14<sup>th<\/sup> and as I have said in the past, what a difference one painting can make!\u00a0 Taking the top spot here was a preparatory study for Eugene Delacroix\u2019s famous painting <em>Le 28 juillet \u2013 la liberte guidant le peuple, 1830<\/em> which made \u00a32.6M (\u00a33.13M \/ $4.2M \u2013 est. \u00a3700-1M) \u2013 now that was a nice price!\u00a0 Coming in second was Courbet\u2019s <em>Bords de la Mer, Palavas<\/em> at \u00a3300K (\u00a3369K \/ $496K \u2013 etc. \u00a3200-300K) and in third was Isaac Israels\u2019 <em>A Dancer<\/em> which made \u00a3115K (\u00a3144K \/ $193K \u2013 est. \u00a350-70K).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28363\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/gustave_courbet_bords_de_la_mer_palavas.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28363\" class=\"wp-image-28363 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/gustave_courbet_bords_de_la_mer_palavas-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"gustave_courbet_bords_de_la_mer_palavas-300x222\" width=\"170\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/gustave_courbet_bords_de_la_mer_palavas-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/gustave_courbet_bords_de_la_mer_palavas.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courbet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rounding out the top five were a small (9 3\/8 x 15 \u00be inch) Pasini titled <em>A Market Before Nusretiye Camii Mosque in Tophane, Constantinople<\/em> which made \u00a3110K (\u00a3138K \/ $185K \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K) while Chierici\u2019s <em>Gioie Infantile<\/em> brought \u00a395K (\u00a3119K \/ $160K \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K).<\/p>\n<p>The sale did have one larger miss, Pasini\u2019s <em>Mercato a Costantinopoli<\/em> (est. \u00a3200-300K); but in general, most of the other misses were at the lower levels \u2026 so that was a nice sign.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28364\" style=\"width: 143px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/isaac_israels_a_dancer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28364\" class=\"wp-image-28364 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/isaac_israels_a_dancer-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"isaac_israels_a_dancer-150x150\" width=\"133\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/isaac_israels_a_dancer-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/isaac_israels_a_dancer-200x198.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Israels<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By the time the sale was over, of the 83 works offered, 60 sold (72.3% &#8212; pretty close to the competition) and the total take was \u00a35.75M ($7.7M \u2013 low end of the estimate range was \u00a33M); so they easily beat the estimate.\u00a0 Going a little deeper, we find that 27 sold below, 19 within and 14 above their estimate range.
