{"id":26904,"date":"2017-06-26T12:37:57","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T16:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=26904"},"modified":"2024-02-01T01:16:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T06:16:00","slug":"art-gallery-closures-grow-for-small-and-midsize-dealers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2017\/06\/art-gallery-closures-grow-for-small-and-midsize-dealers\/","title":{"rendered":"Art Gallery Closures Grow for Small and Midsize Dealers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/25\/arts\/design\/art-gallery-closures-grow-for-small-and-midsize-dealers.html?smid=tw-share\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"26CLOSINGSJP2-master675\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/26CLOSINGSJP2-master675.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Gallery<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is really sad&#8230; I fear we are going to see more of this as\u00a0\u201c<em>large galleries with multiple locations grab wider audiences, dominate art fairs and focus on trophy works.\u201d <\/em>The people most affected are the younger\/emerging artists and those collectors looking for great art at affordable prices.\u00a0 Smaller galleries simply cannot compete when it costs $15K, $20K, $30K or more, to exhibit at just one of the more reputable art fairs.\u00a0 Most need to exhibit at multiple fairs each year to reach different audiences and continue building their client base.\u00a0 In just 12 months, even a small gallery may spend\u00a0upwards of\u00a0$100K on fairs\u2026\u00a0and that is\u00a0on top of the rent they are paying for their physical gallery space.\u00a0 We don\u2019t even need to get into what a space in New York City will cost you\u2026 that will make you feel queasy!<\/p>\n<p>Today, for many, buying a work of art is more about its investment potential than loving and wanting to live with it.\u00a0 In addition,\u00a0people have become accustomed to a one-stop-shop &#8212; so\u00a0art fairs\u00a0or surfing the Internet\u00a0satisfies that need.\u00a0The problem is that fair-goers\u00a0are only seeing a fraction of the art that is available and while viewing works on the Internet is nice and easy, there is still nothing like seeing it in person.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, two of the three big art fairs in the Hamptons closed their doors\u00a0&#8230; and that is only the beginning.\u00a0 As more art galleries close, so will other art fairs.
