{"id":24541,"date":"2016-06-27T10:07:27","date_gmt":"2016-06-27T14:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=24541"},"modified":"2019-02-28T22:22:08","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T03:22:08","slug":"looted-art-returned-to-germany-by-the-monument-men-sold-to-nazis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2016\/06\/looted-art-returned-to-germany-by-the-monument-men-sold-to-nazis\/","title":{"rendered":"Looted art returned to Germany by the Monument Men sold to Nazis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is truly amazing. \u00a0It has been reported that works of art returned to the Bavarian State at the end of World War II were not returned to their rightful owners. \u00a0Instead, they were either added to the Bavarian State Painting Collection or sold to families of high ranking Nazis.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>As the Americans withdrew from Germany, the so-called Monuments Men left 10,600 works with the Bavarian State Government with the clear mandate to try to return them to the people they were stolen from.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>\u2018But the museums and public authorities divided the treasure among themselves divided,\u2019 according to the report. One rare Canaletto copy from Hitler\u2019s private collection ended up of the German Parliamentary Association premises in Bonn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>\u2018Many works had been auctioned off.
