{"id":14838,"date":"2014-06-12T16:25:24","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T16:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/blog\/?p=14838"},"modified":"2019-03-01T00:06:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T05:06:42","slug":"german-museum-exhibits-van-goghs-ear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2014\/06\/german-museum-exhibits-van-goghs-ear\/","title":{"rendered":"German Museum exhibits van Gogh&#8217;s Ear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/on1.zkm.de\/zkm\/stories\/storyReader$8887\">Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe Museums website<\/a>\u00a0(ZKM), the cultural\u00a0institution\u00a0is hosting a very important work of\u00a0\u201cliving art.\u201d\u00a0 With the vision of artist Diemut Strebe, scientific engineering and computer imaging technology, the severed ear of Vincent van Gogh has been regrown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story began in 1887 when van Gogh and fellow artist Paul Gauguin moved to Paris on the request of van Gogh\u2019s brother, Theo, who dealt in Gauguin\u2019s art.\u00a0 Seeing they would be great companions, the two men agreed to live together in a small home and began exploring the ways in which two artists could paint the same scene and finish with two very contrasting images.\u00a0 According to the van Gogh Gallery, it was not long until Gauguin began to find it very difficult to live with van Gogh; ultimately deciding the best thing was for both men to go their separate ways.\u00a0 On the night of December 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0in an act of rage, the tortured artist took a razor to his ear.\u00a0 The relationship between both artists was ruined and van Gogh would forever blame himself for the falling out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, over a century and a quarter later, van Gogh\u2019s \u201cear\u201d is on view at the ZK Museum.\u00a0 Composed of living cells from his brother\u2019s great-grandson, Lieuwe van Gogh, the replica ear is an \u201cidentical\u201d copy of the infamous severed ear, sharing 1\/16 of the genes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The museum reports that you can even talk to the ear by way of a computer that\u2019s software converts sound into simulate nerve impulses, in real time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cliving art\u201d display will be on view until next month at the ZK Museum.\u00a0 Then, the work will travel across the Atlantic to New York next spring, to Feldman Gallery, who represents Diemut Strebe\u2019s works.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/on1.zkm.de\/zkm\/stories\/storyReader$8887\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"2014_sugababe_diemut-strebe_003\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/2014_sugababe_diemut-strebe_003.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe Museums website\u00a0(ZKM), the cultural\u00a0institution\u00a0is hosting a very important work of\u00a0\u201cliving art.\u201d\u00a0 With the vision of artist Diemut Strebe, scientific engineering and computer imaging technology, the severed ear of Vincent van Gogh &hellip;
