Narrative: ‘Through a Pane of Glass’ is an imagining of the time and place when singer/songwriter Susanne Vega composed the a capella song ‘Tom’s Diner.’
The songwriter was inspired by a comment by her friend, a photographer, who mentioned that in his work, he sometimes felt as if “he saw his whole life through a pane of glass.” Vega attempted to write the song from this perspective, while sitting at Tom’s Restaurant in NYC.
The painting is based on the interior of Tom’s Restaurant, imagining what it may have looked like one morning in 1981 when Vega may have composed the song.
