This is very old news for many in the business, but I am sure most people are not aware of this fact. It is really sad when you realize that most works owned by museums never see the light of day. In fact, only about 5% of a museum’s collection is ever exhibited. I have often looked through the Met’s online database just to see images of some of the great 19th century Academic works in its collection.
