‘Marvelous Objects: Surrealist Sculpture From Paris to New York’ @Hirshhorn

January 12, 2016

This looks like an exhibit some may wish to see.  “Marvelous Objects: Surrealist Sculpture From Paris to New York,”  organized by Valerie J. Fletcher, at the Hirshhorn Museum, features more than 120 works by about 20 artists.  As E.A. Carmean, Jr. points out in his article:

“Marvelous Objects” clarifies this multifarious assembly by devoting a few galleries to one or two major figures; the Dada objects of Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray are paired as a Surrealist overture. Other rooms exhibit Surrealist sculpture grouped under 10 themes such as “Biomorphism” and “Fantasies and Memories.” The large constructed metal works of Alexander Calder andDavid Smith are paired under Ms. Fletcher’s heading of “Industrial-Strength Surrealism,” a witticism rare in museums.

The exhibit will run through February 15.  For more, you can read the rest of Mr. Carmean’s article HERE; or you can check out the museums web site HERE.
