Leonardo DiCaprio to donate art installation to LACMA

June 10, 2015

Actor, art enthusiast and environmentalist, Leonardo DiCaprio has plans to donate a large LED installation to the LACMA.  The work by John Gerrard titled “Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada)” meshes DiCaprio’s passion for the arts and environmental conservation as it simulates a real time view of the solar thermal power tower in the Nevada desert.  The tower, surrounded by 10,000 mirrors was meticulously recreated using video game software to display dynamic movements of the sun, moon and stars in the Nevada sky.  As solar light reflect off the thousands of mirrors it creates usable electricity.

According to Michael Govan, the director of LACMA, DiCaprio, a great friend to the museum, had them in mind when first planning to acquire the work. “Solar Reserve” stood in Lincoln Center last year and will be on view in the Unlimited section of Art Basel in Switzerland this month.
