SuicideGirls respond to Richard Prince selling their Instagram posts as art

The contemporary art market seems to have no boundaries these days.   Artists are presenting works comprised on ‘found-objects” and people are willing to pay exorbitant prices for these “works of art”.  Just this month, Jeff Koons’ “New Hoover Deluxe Shampoo Polishers” sold for just under $6 million at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale.   What was the medium of this pricey work of art?  Literally three floor polishers, some fluorescent lights and an acrylic base to hold it all together… That is a lot of money for a few vacuum cleaners to hang on a wall.

 

So when Selena Mooney (aka: Missy Suicide), founder of @SuicideGirls, an Instagram account belonging to a group of models and burlesque performers with a punk-rock twist, discovered that one of their images was used by contemporary artist Richard Prince for a work of art and sold for $90,000 at Frieze Art Fair she decided to take it one step further.   She in now offering prints of the Instragram post for $90 with proceeds being donated to charity.  FULL ARTICLE
