Janitor Throws Out over 60 Artworks at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf

June 24, 2014

Students and faculty are outraged as 60 destroyed works were found in a dumpster outside the Kunstkademie Dusseldorf (Dusseldorf Academy of Art).  According to an article posted on ArtNet News, a frustrated janitor or group of janitors took knifes to the canvases and stomped on the works in order to break their stretchers.

While the individual(s) who damaged the works remain unknown, the academy is aware of why they took such action.  Students have been permitted to store their works in the hallways due to lack of proper storage, but only for a limited time after fire regulations tightened. Works that were left in the hallways for an extended period of time were brought out to the courtyard to be picked up by the students. However, this time around in order to make a point to the students, janitors ruined the works instead.
