Dinosaur Skeletons Headed to Auction, Not Museum

July 30, 2013

An incredible discovery of two fossilized dinosaurs in the Hell Creek formation in Montana are headed to New York.  No, it’s not the newest addition to the Museum of Natural History; these dueling dinos will hit the auction block this November at Bonhams New York.  With an estimated price tag of $7-9 million for the pair, these skeletons could bring the highest price ever paid for dinosaur fossils.  The find includes two dinosaurs which seem to be locked together in some sort of “mortal combat.”  More interestingly, they both appear to be a previously unknown species. A Nonotyrannus Lancensis, which is a pygmy T. Rex (Yes I know, how cute, a small T. Rex but it could definitely still eat you!) was found with its teeth embedded in the neck of the other dinosaur, a Ceratopsian, relative of the Triceratops.  Additionally, the chest and skull of the tyrannosaur were crushed, possibly from being kicked by the Ceratopsian.  It was quite a battle, but it appears that the real winners are the couple who own the land where these dinos were found.
