Artfully using stained glass to capture solar energy

July 29, 2013

For years now, I’ve been telling my father that he should install solar panels on the roof of our home. His response has always been, “I would, but they look so ugly.” Now I personally think the positives far outweigh the negatives (especially since the only negative I can think of is that they can be an eyesore… oh, and they are crazy expensive to have installed, but that’s besides the point). Anyway, Toronto based artist, Sarah Hall, has created a series of incredible stained glass panels which produce solar energy. Installed at the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Saskatoon, Canada, these works of art are expected to produce roughly 2,500 kilowatt hours each year which is approximately one-third of the energy used by the typical home in Saskatoon. It seems the days of ugly solar panels blanketing the roof of a home are short lived.
