African contemporary art seems to be breaking onto the scene. Major museums in London and New York will be showcasing some of the leading contemporary artists out of Africa this summer. In fact, the Brooklyn Museum of Art now houses a collection of El Anatsui’s work, who is one of the only African artists to have a solo exhibition in the United States. Additionally, Anatsui was invited to create a large wall-hanging sculpture for this summer’s exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. Anatsui will not be the only contemporary African artist on display in London this summer, as Tate Modern will be hosting several exhibitions featuring Sudanese painter Ibrahim El-Salahi, works by Meschac Gaba from Benin as well as several other African artists.
