Tino Sehgal: Invisible Art Worth £100k

May 7, 2013

blank imageBritish-born artist (and I am using the title artist loosely), Tino Seghal, produces art however there is no physical creation. Yet, amazingly his works are for sale and can fetch anywhere from £50,000 to £100,000. So, what is a Sehgal artwork? It is often described as performance art but Sehgal insists he choreographs “constructed situations.” Sehgal feels a performance piece has spectators but in his works the spectators are actually part of the artwork. For example, last year at Tate’s turbine hall he gathered 70 participants to mingle with visitors and ask unsettling questions followed by a  brief conversations before quickly moving on. There are no photographs, there is no video documentation, all that is left is the memory.
