portrait of a man laughing

Rembrandt

The Getty Museum has announced today that they have introduced two new and rare European works to their collection.  A self-portrait, by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, titled Rembrandt Laughing c. 1628.  This work portrays a youthful Rembrandt (probably around the age of 22) dressed as a soldier, painted on copper.  The other work debuting at the Getty is by Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, the premier Venetian painter of his time.  The Grand Canal in Venice from Palazzo Flangini to Campo San Marcuola, is known to be one of the greatest works completed by Canaletto and now accompanies the two drawings the museum owned prior to this acquisition.
