Vilhelm Hammershoi’s “Interior with Woman at Piano, Strandgade 30”

Last night’s sale showed there is still a lot of strength at the upper levels of the market … even for works that do not fit the category.  The top seller was Marc Chagall, with his Les Amoureux selling to a Russian bidder at $28.5M (est. $12-$18M). Other strong results were seen for works by Monet, Picasso, Magritte and an outlier — Vilhelm Hammershoi (an artist whose works have always been sold in the 19th century sales). Last night his Interior with Woman at Piano, Strandgade 30 carried an estimate of $2.5-$3.5M and sold for an auction record of $6.2M (the artist’s previous auction record was $3.2M, set in 2015).
