Collector and Art Critic 1, no. 1 (April 15, 1899)

A very informative article, by Agnès Penot on the Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide site, discussing the expansion of the art market during the 19th century.  European dealers realized that the United States was an untapped source of wealth and by the late 1840s, Goupil had opened a branch in New York.  It wasn’t long before many more galleries joined in.  But do not think it was all sunshine and roses — there were many obstacles to overcome.

Now, almost 170 years later, look where we are … the United States is one of the largest art markets in the world.
