Modigliani

It appears that a major exhibition of Amedeo Modigliani’s work, at the Doge’s Palace in Genoa, contained a number of fakes. What?  According to reports, Carlo Pepi, a Tuscan art critic and collector, expressed his doubts about the authenticity of works in the exhibition back in February and authorities have now confiscated 21 suspect artworks.

Andrea Vogt notes, in her article, that: After magistrates received independent confirmation of suspected fraud,  the exhibit was shut down three days early – little comfort to the more than 100,000 people who have visited since it opened in March.

Three people, including the curator from Lugano, Switzerland, are under investigation.

It is amazing that the exhibit was allowed to go on for so long.  There needs to be far more care taken by curators before allowing works to be exhibited.  Giving credibility to fakes only hurts the overall market. I am still wondering … How? Why? What was the motive? Could it be Financial???
