Agnes Gund

People are always moaning about how much people spend on art and what ‘good’ they could have done with that money.  I have always believed that some of those lucky sellers will use the money to help others … well, here is one that is doing just that.  Earlier this year Agnes Gund sold Roy Lichtenstein’s “Masterpiece” for a reported $165 million (that would rank as one of the most expensive paintings ever sold).   Last week it was reported that she has now donated $100 million from that sale to create the Art for Justice Fund.

According to an NBC News article: The Art for Justice Fund will make grants to organizations that are already involved in criminal justice reform. Its goal is to reduce the prison population in the U.S. — currently the largest in the world — and to help provide education and employment opportunities for those leaving the system. The fund will also support art programs that address the injustices of mass incarceration in the nation.

Good going Ms. Gund!
