Forged Provenance — FBI

April 10, 2017

Seems like this is a weekly occurrence … another dealer moves to the Dark Side.  According to the FBI’s website, Eric Spoutz forged paperwork in order to sell bogus works of art by de Kooning, Kline and Mitchell.  On February 16 he was sentenced to 41 months in prison, ordered to forfeit the $1.45M he received and pay $154.1K in restitution.

Spoutz was selling lower level works by these big name artists in order to fly under the radar.  Among his victims were dealers and auction rooms. I wonder if Hollywood will be calling?
