Art amateur discovers earliest Gainsborough portrait while helping his son online

Thomas Gainsborough

While scouring online catalogs, Robert Mulraine saw a portrait that caught his eye.  He passed the image on to his son James (an art conservator) and they acquired the painting for £2,600.

The two showed the work to Hugh Belsey, the art historian and world authority on Thomas Gainsborough, and it will now be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonne.

That is a really nice way to end 2016!
