The Dark Side: Wall Street Dealmaker Says Professor Took Him for a Ride

October 18, 2016

Another sad story from the art world’s Dark Side.  According to Graham Bowley’s article in The New York Times, Andrew Hall, a Wall Street trader, was “hoodwinked” by a pair of “unlikely adversaries” … Lorettann Gascard, an art history professor from Franklin Pierce University, and her son, Nikolas Gascard.

Hall is suing the pair (who seem to have vanished) for almost $700,000. Over a period of time, Hall amassed a large collection of Leon Golub paintings from the two … all of which are now thought to be fakes. What I find interesting, is that 8 of the works were purchased by Hall at auctions held by both Sotheby’s and Christie’s.  Then, at some point, he made direct contact with the Gascards and bought 16 more directly.
