Contemporary Sale in London — Brexit? What Brexit?

June 28, 2016

From the results at this evening’s sale of Contemporary art in London one has to wonder if Brexit will have any ill effects on the art market.  46 works offered, 40 sold (87% sell-through rate) and a total take of £43.3M hammer (£52.2M – $69.4M – with buyer’s premium) and the pre-sale estimate range was £35.4-50M.  So at the hammer they fell right in the middle of the range and beat the upper end with the buyer’s premium.

There were some pretty impressive results … a Jenny Saville made a record £6.8M ($9.05M – est. £1.5-2M), a Keith Haring brought £4.2M ($5.55M – est. £2-3M) and an Adrian Ghenie achieved 1.9M ($2.5M – est. £400-600K).  There will be more results this week.
