Happy Birthday Joan Mitchell

February 12, 2016

Happy Birthday to the late, American “second generation” abstract expressionist painter, Joan Mitchell.  Mitchell, born in Chicago, Illinois, was one of the few female artists to become recognized as an important abstract expressionist painter in the 1900’s.  Her early works were strongly influenced by artists like, Paul Cezanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh and then later influenced by Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline.  Many of Mitchell’s paintings are now held in exceptional collections such as, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and Tate Gallery, among many others.  Her works at auction sell for millions of dollars, her most expensive work; Untitled (1960) was sold in 2014 at Christie’s New York for $11.9 million.
